Hi there,
we recently competed in a pursuit race. as we were making our way round we realised we could not make it to one mark as there was insufficient depth for us we did hit the bottom a couple of times, its all soft mud so no real issue but we bailed and Headed for the channel. we retired as we could not complete the course. The question is how should our points be awarded, we were given a DNF (all entries +1). I thought they may decide to award us average points as we were unable to finish through no fault of our own. Is there a Presadent for this ?
we aren’t too fussed really but were just curious.

Thanks
T

You chose to enter an event for which your boat was less suitable than the opposition?
or the race committee failed to set a course that was reasonably fair knowing the entry list?

Is your boat extreme?
Could you only not get around the mark because you were late getting there having performed poorly earlier in the race?
If you were a genius navigator might you have found a route around the mark?

I see this from both sides, having suffered as both competitor and race team.

There are two solutions:
a) one design racing
b) beer and a sense of humour.

Appeal for redress. Standard stuff, provided you do it within the time limits set in the Sailing Instructions.
