Portugal lockdown looms - what happened last time?

It seems likely a new lockdown will be announced in Portugal on Tuesday.

Our boat is stuck on the hard with old seacocks removed and new ones not fitted. Yet as they are on order. If it is not relaunched by the start of the lockdown we could be homeless as living on board on the hard is not allowed in Cascais.

So - a couple of questions for any veterans of the last lockdown:

- if a lockdown is announced on Tuesday, how much advance warning is there likely to be? A day, two days?

- were boatyards shut last time?

- what was it like living aboard in a marina?

- if a lockdown is announced on Tuesday, how much advance warning is there likely to be? A day, two days? Within a day (as on 19 Mar).

- were boatyards shut last time? No and living on a boat on the hard was still permitted.

- what was it like living aboard in a marina? OK - self policing so nothing much changed - could still go out for shopping & exercise.

Because the community was self-policing life, life was relatively easy.

In lockdown will not being able to live on board when on hard be enforced?

We were on board in the yard when lock down started last year and yard stopped all staff work, no lifts in or out. it stopped movement of people outside local area and within local area except for food shopping, seeing doctor etc. Those on board were OK but others couldn't (in theory) arrive. Local boat movements in water weren't allowed without permission and some arrivals were quarantined on anchor. Unlike the UK, hefty fines were handed out to rule breakers.

Where was this? Sounds different to Sailfree's experience.

Bruce's in Faro. The general rule was to stay where you are and don't move around so those already in the yard could stay put, as could those living in marinas. I seem to remember there was a silly situation in Lagos or somewhere where liveaboards could go day sailing but the locals couldn't come to their boats and do the same.

Lagos - not so.

From lockdown (19 Mar) until lockdown was relaxed, anybody in Lagos could visit their boats but no vessel movements permitted - for yachts. Unlike in other locations, the lifting bridge bridge made this enforceable.

As Lagos was the Algarve port of refuge, yachts could arrive to replenish but would be quarantined as required. Lagos was well placed to meet this requirement. Boats arriving at Portimao were held in isolation for long periods.

Once initial lockdown was relaxed, all vessels could advise SEF and go day sailing. Additionally, with permission (again from SEF), Portuguese citizens and residents could anchor off over night.

Until that illegal party on 6 Jun, there were no cases of Covid in Lagos county.

Looking to the future, given the disparity between north and south, I rather hope control measures continue to be linked to the number of Covid cases at county level but travel between counties strictly controlled.

What happens with the block? Loo & showers?

Available through out but masks are required in enclosed places where 2 mtrs distancing can not be achieved. Like supermarkets, bars and restaurants, decontam facilities are in all the maria facilities and on the security gates.

Since the pandemic started Lagos has had one vessel that arrived and then tested positive. The vessel was placed in quarantine under the control of the maritime police (who took a very active interest). Once the crew 'were clean' the vessel departed for the Canaries.

Apart from that incident, to date, there have been no positive cases reported on the pontoons.

We have a porta potti on board, we took out one of the toilets on board, We shower on board, use the pp. I empty it in to the bog in the communal showers every two days. So no sharing of liquids in the communal bogs/showers

Lagos - not so.

Just gone back through threads, it was non residents (not locals) who weren't allowed to anchor out overnight, your post -

By these rules, a British berth-holder with a British flagged vessel and Portuguese residency can get permission to moor out overnight and visit other Portuguese marinas but the German in the next boat, even if the boat is Portuguese flagged, unless he is a Portuguese resident, he can day-sail but not stay out over night or visit other marinas.

Can’t be bothered to go back through the posts but seem to remember writing this. Which was the situation after the full lock down was relaxed.

It was factually correct and led to some EU residents (German, French, Dutch, Swiss) paying €15 each to get Portuguese temporary residency and enjoy the same privileges enjoyed by the Brits, who were not in the EU but had Residency in Portugal - funny old world.
