Local

1. Ha’penny Pier Pontoons -
Harwich Haven Authority advise visiting sailors using the Ha’penny Pier pontoons, Harwich, that the facility will be unmanned from 1 November 2021 for the winter season. Our Pier Attendants will be back on duty at the beginning of April 2022. Please note:
• The gate accessing the pontoons will remain shut throughout the winter, for security reasons and following incidences of vandalism and unsocial behaviour.
• Harwich Haven Authority gives priority usage of the Ha’penny Pier pontoons to local fishermen during the off season.
• Sailors should note that if the bridges connecting the pontoons are raised… it is unsafe to enter the mooring facilities.
• Ha’penny Pier and the pontoons are under 24 hour CCTV surveillance.
• Please see our 2021 Yachting Guide, which contains safety of navigation information and all emergency contact details.
The Pier Attendants’ telephone will be manned between 0900 -1600 during the winter season – 07748 154039. Alternatively, email pier.master@hha.co.uk.

2. Harwich - Survey Operations & Maintenance Dredging - Survey Operations - On or around the 31 October 2021 the survey vessel Geo Focus (IMO number 962885) will start survey operations within Harwich Harbour and approaches for approximately three weeks. The Geo Focus will tow a remotely operated vehicle when undertaking surveys covering Harwich Harbour and the Deep-Water Channel, out to no. 1 & 2 buoys. Her expected survey speed will typically be between 2.5 and 4 knots and will be sailing lines along the channel at close centres. On 30 October 2021 the Geo Focus will deploy a frame on the seabed to enable testing of the survey equipment in the Cork Hole in the following WGS84 location: 51°54’20.4”N 001°25’26.9”E The bed frame will be marked with a buoy and be in place for a number of hours as the Geo Focus sails lines across it. The bed-frame will be removed as soon as the testing is completed. All operations will be reported to Harwich VTS on VHF 71, please note that all vessels may be subject to additional traffic organisation.

3. Raysand Channel - NAVIGATION - Mariners are advised that there have been reports of less water than charted between the RAYSAND and RAYSAND MIDDLE navigation marks. We therefore advise that extreme caution be deployed if you intend to cross to or from the river Blackwater using this route and in all circumstances, it is strongly recommended that passage should only be made on a rising (flood) tide. (umm. Bit of a surprise. I have asked if there were any more details but no response from the Harbour Master. XO Gladys and I 'did' the Ray Sand on 21st September and frankly didn't find any change - not at all. Between the Raysand and the 'Middle' is the bit that dries and there is a 'ridge' - a huge exaggerated adjective for a little rise - between the two buoys. I didn't think of working up the data into a chartlet at the time because of the absence of change but I will do shortly.

And, da, da, daaaaa

4. Port of Wells is adredging!

That is all.
