We are fortunate in owning a lovely vessel that fits most of our requirements, which is, I believe, as much as one can hope for with any boat.

However, our modest retirement income means a walk ashore Marina berth is out of the question in the South. 10K per annum in Premier Marina's for example!

We have been using a club mid harbour pontoon mooring that required dinghying from a slip only suitable for a couple of retired sailors with mobility issues at or around high tide. It also, for reasons I wont go into here, required multiple club memberships and security and criminal records clearance, all extra expenses.

Some years ago we put our name down for a Harbourmasters berth in a small South Coast port. Walk ashore, secure, water and electricity, near to the town centre.

Due to a charter angling boat being sold, we have now got one. At a cost we can afford as we can stay afloat there all year. Our previous berth meant being afloat or on the hard during the winter months. Again, extra expense.

To top it all, on our sail to the new berth we were escorted by a pod of Bottlenose Dolphins almost to the Harbour entrance! An auspicious beginning we hope.

We have just spent five days alongside, sorting out jobs we have not been able to do so far due to a house move and engine problems, which appear almost solved.

So, if any forum member sees our boat " Jarrow lily " with the CA Burgee and Ensign flying at Dukes Wharf, make yourselves known and have a socially distanced coffee or a cold beer.

Cheers!

Sounds very much like Littlehampton on the town side where there was once timber wharfs and as the port is home to many angling boats and it’s a small south coast port.....Downside exposed entrance and strong ebb,but good fish and chips?

The absolute moment John Rodriguez of these pages - he did the conveyancing of the private purchase as it was a lot of cash - showed the vendor that the money was transferred safely the vendor said " Will you be changing the name? "

I asked the vendor the origin of the name, whereupon he said " Unlike many blokes I had a fantastic relationship with my wifes Mother. She was so helpful in the early and tough days of our marriage. I told her if I ever aspired to a brand new boat I would name it after her. She came from Jarrow and her name was Lily. "

First Mate and I thought it was such a nice story we kept the name.

And the vendor happy.

My new berth too.

After taking the previous winter storage - the previous mid harbour pontoon was in the aptly named " Heavy Reach " above Wicor Marine - and other expenses out we will be paying 20% more for a walk ashore with water, electricity and good security.

It was worth the time on the waiting list.

Excellent.

The Swan 43 on which I’m lucky enough to race every now and then is called Espalmador, which I’m sure many of you know is the name of the small island between Formentera and Ibiza.

The previous owner explained that the beach on Espalmador was where he had lost his virginity. It would have seemed churlish to change the name.

We called our Achilles 'Jondies' it was what my wifes friend at work diagnosed when she was pregnant with our first child. It had a yellow hull too.
