Hi there people. I have recently taken over a wooden "fishing " boat. I have been trying to find out what kind of boat she is and even possibly, who/where she was built.

I received the following information from the previous owner:
"From memory she was built by AJ Woods Newhaven Kent as a gentleman's lauch / fishing boat. 1963 seems to ring a bell for when she was built"

Now, as you can imagine this does not give a lot away.

I will attach some pictures of what she looks like. I will truly appreciate if someone can help identify the manufacturer, type/model of boat etc.

Welcome to the forum

Does not seem to be any record of a builder of that name - although Newhaven is in Sussex, not Kent. Big builder in Newhaven was Mitchells who built similar types, but as you see, different hull shape from yours.
ournewhaven.org.uk/page_id__2387.aspx

Up until the 70s there were small boat builders operating in many seaside locations building small boats out of wood but they died off pretty quickly as GRP came in and particularly as values of waterfront property rocketed. A small number (like Mitchells) made the transition to GRP although since then most have gone or just exist repairing boats.

Think you will have to accept the boat is what it is and enjoy it!

Hi @Tranona, thank you for your reply. I think you might be correct. The very heavy build of the boat especially the hull, makes me think that it was built for beach launches.

I will accept her for what she is and will keep good record of the repairs. This is our opportunity to put our own stamp on it.

I took more pictures today.

She is similar in some ways to the shape of the Newhaven Sea Angler 23 which was built in fibreglass - the mould for this model was probably taken off a wooden boat similar to yours.

Here is one for sale :
newhaven sea angler, poole/dorset - Ad 62112

And a photo of her - the sheer lines of both boats up to the lower rubbing strake above the clinker hull is similar, but your boat then has more sheer on the foredeck.

I think you are right. There are many different boats out there with similar looking lines. Mine doesn't have port windows in the cabin. I might add some while we have her out next month.

It's going to be a interesting 2 year project.

Thank you everyone for your input. I have decided she is a Mitchel "type" sea angler/cruiser.
