First time I have been to Maldon and it looks a lovely place to visit by boat. Once again we seemed to be there at low water and once again quite a lot of Essex Mud. Short video below which might be useful for any boaters thinking of visiting as you can see what the channel etc is like.

Past the barges and round the bend are pontoons behind Marinestore. They can give details of who runs them. A friend goes there in his Moody 346 drawing 4'6". The town is nice too.

Thanks for that information. I think we stopped before we got quite that far and turned round and went the other way. Was going to fly the drone but the wind was mighty strong so decided not to but that would have shown it well. Will make a return trip on a better day weather wise

Oh yes, Byrhtnoth (the statue) - first example of 'British' fair play.

The Vikings landed by mistake at Northey Island, demand the money but got refused.

"You must not get our gold
so softly. Points and edges must reconcile us first,
a grim war-playing, before we give you any tribute"

So tried to cross the short causeway to the mainland. Wasn't going too well until Byrhtnoth agreed that they could have a fair battle on firm ground. So they got ashore and all lined up. Then they chopped Byrht's head off and won. Learn the lesson. Never trust them foreigners!

On the tide when the barges are coming up to the quay, t'is great. They do a handbrake turn to spin round to face down river ready to go. They carry way abaft the quay, drop the hook and spin. pick up the hook and ferry glide to the quay. t'is well worth watching.

Brent in 1983., Viking replica in 1991 (sorry didn't realise t'was just a thumbnail. Must find it somewhere).

As regards the fabled "battle of Maldon", there has not been any archeological evidence found to corroborate the tale.

That is interesting I have recently worked on a project where we found many Anglo Saxon graves with artefacts, given the Anglo Saxons were 400 years earlier than the Vikings you would have thought something would have been found especially on a battle site

It was originally a drunken bet in the Queens Head on Christmas day.. That they couldn’t have christmas lunch on the other side of the river... So a table was set and a dinner bought out. Then the council took over and made it "safe".

I hadn't realised the Vikings did Christmas as such. ;)

It used to be run on New Year's Day and involved drinking a pint on the opposite bank. Apparently, the worst bit was being hosed down by Enid, the landlady of Queens Head. She was merciless!

That was the second part of the story.
After the drunken bet, the regulars decided to do it again which was repeated a few times as nothing more than a few mated getting muddy. Then it was organised into a "proper" event by someone like the Round Table. In that from it ran for a few years and was once mentioned on Trans World Sport (Saturday morning, remember it?). Then the council started to get involved demanding H&S and PII etc because the event was taking place on their land. The Organisers said no thanks for a game of soldiers as it was getting too much hard work. So the Council took over the runnning. Of course the first H&S assessment considered, a "risk" of getting cold so they moved the event to mid summer to reduec the "risk". Such is the way of drunken bets.

Lovely boat, are you a member of the OGA? and is that you now moored in Bradwell Marina?

Thanks, we are delighted with her - been prevaricating for several years and decided to go for it. A Norfolk Gypsy but you probably know that.
I found the OGA FB page and website but not joined yet. Not us at Bradwell - she is currently on her trailer for the winter.
