Hi all

For this that are interested this is what Morris lubricants advised me to buy:
Golden Film 20W-50 Classic Motor Oil.

5 L purchased.

Can I use this in the reverse gear and 110s saildrive leg too?

I checked the manual but it's not absolutely clear and I'm keen not to mess this up! Thanks

Personally I might have chosen the 10W-40 on the basis that when hot is closer to the originally recommended monograde SAE 30 but if Morris say use the 20W-50 I'd accept that that especially in an old well worn engine

The sail drive uses the same oil as the engine.

That is a non detergent oil to only API spec SA. It is suitable only for vintage petrol engines and even then requires very frequent oil changes.

I'd definitely suggest looking for a different Marine engineer

I would go with that. My MD7A seems to be quite happy with 15-40 multigrade non synthetic diesel which was what was recommended by my local engineer. If anything I would go up to 20-40, certainly not any thinner.

The SAE30 Vintage described is not suitable for diesel use even on older engtines like the MD Volvos. Its a very specialised oil designed specifically for Petrol engines pre about 1970. I used to use it in a 1958 slow running petrol engine, and was told by the supplier never to use it in newer engines.

Just dug out the original manual for my MD7 which specifies Oil quality API - CD (DS) SAE 30 above 10c. Below 10c Use SAE 20. Vyv says CC is virtually the same so usable as a substitute, and is certainly much easier to find!

I found this after I posted, seems useful as it explains the letters:

http://www.oilspecifications.org/api_eolcs.php

Don't forget that these are specifically for automotive use. Requirements for yacht auxiliary engines, particularly raw water cooled ones, may be very different. Although I must say this is a comprehensive list of the specification parameters, and quite useful.

It will exceed CC wont it

dunno . was it a diesel engine oil or just a for petrol engines.

I saw it last week but did not bother to look at it

It may not have had an API rating at all Just An ACEA one. We need Vyv to explain those!
