+1 for Pauls answer. Sand filled fuses common throughout the industry, in all sizes of "Cartridge" fuse. Think you will find it is silica sand that is used. Nothing "Marine" about them. You can still buy sand filled fuses, the sand fulfilled various purposes, but none were "marine fuses", as stated in post #6 "No such animal as a "Marine rated Fuse" "
In the utility industry, there are fuses filled with sand . When there is a fault, the current through the fuse will heat up the surrounding sand and melt it into glass, turning it into an insulator. It is a very fast acting fuse.
