Luke Powell’s “PELLEW” was launched today

I was very surprised not to see a thread about this.

Luke Powell’s big project, a cutter built on the lines of the Falmouth pilot cutter “VINCENT” (1852-1922).

I was watching the live stream of that, impressive, a lovely thing.

So was I. 56 tons on the crane without rig or ballast.

Looking at her waterline in the picture, with her lower mast in, but not the other spars, I assume she has a fairly heavy engine in place, but she will need quite a lot of ballast.

Yes it looked a bit scary. I'm thinking of signing up for a week on her next year.

Curiously enough, I found myself sitting next to LP's ex sister in law, Veronique, two days after I had read a biop of Luke in Chasse Mare. They were all together on Hydra in his Greek days (along with Leonard Cohen) Small world.

If there was ever a bigger pilot cutter than the ‘VINCENT’ / ‘PELLEW’ I don’t know of her. The Le Havre pilot cutters of which ‘JOLIE BRISE’is the outstanding example were bigger than the Bristol Channel skiffs but not by this much!
