They‘re sized to fit the companionway steps. Actually, the blue one tends to be placed on the quayside for removing or donning shoes, the other one is one the steps whenever we’re moored to a quayside. Stops dirt tracking into the saloon.
Easy enough to make them bigger by increasing the number of strands in the mat for width, more repeats of the cross over for length. They work really well as dirt traps and you tow them behind the boat to clean them.
We sail in Greek waters, so there’s a general no shoes on board rule.

Sorry to sound negative but why do you want these mats ? They are hardly wider than your foot and look like a slip / trip harzard to me. Why not macrame a toilet roll holder instead ?
In the Marlinspike Sailor book, it has a chapter on ladder mats. It says "The mats should be secured to the ladder steps by nailing all around the edge with brass escutcheon pins."
