Why do crews of all women always sail slower than men? The start of the Volvo has been described as 'champagne sailing' so why are the women already behind. I cannot figure it out...

Look at any part of life: women generally are less competitive in business, politics etc. I think it has to with risk aversiveness, woman was designed primarily to take care of her offspring (if she dies the offspring will die) whereas man was designed to take the risks in life (hunting or whatever). And some of this is still left in us ....regardless of what those who wish for more equality say.

You notice the same kind of thing in animals: a female dog is usually easier to train than a male because of a different mentality.

Men are better at it.

The reasons are as obvious as the nose on you face. Men are just better and more superior at the task. Women are better at having babies so in the end everything balances out.

Not braver. This is simple minded macho twaddle. This may pass for humour, but it merely provides ammo for the ladies. Perhaps it may provide clues why so few ladies post to this forum.

Somehow Steve...

...I don't think that Violetta would even bother about commenting on such twaddle. Scuttlebutt has been going downhill for a very long time, but what we see now is the corpse trying to nail the lid down from the inside!

Well actually,..

although I was one of the critics of the new format i now have to admit that the "polarisation" it has caused - S'butt for (almost) strictly sailing - PBo for bits, engines & hardware, Marian's chintzy supersite for Club chat & heated discussion plus a few "by invitation" or specialist (even quirky) sites for the broader-minded - has worked out to be quite workable.

Now must go before Violetta discovers me (& you) here!!

My Contractual life partner of the opposite gender

Loves knitting , reading paperbacks and hates standing long watches, working towards a fully "shaken down" systemised boat and trimming the sails to get the last 0.1 of a knot. I on the other hand loathe the thought of knitting and love all the above nautical things plus working on our two near classic cars to keep them at their best.

Now what does that say?

Something including:- Stereotypical, Bourgeoisie, Duped, Slave to Narrow Convention or Lap-dog perhaps? or just that men and women do have different attitudes to and roles in life?

Blazing Saddles.

Anyone rememer the Lily von Schtuck song 'I'm so bored' with the greatest put down line to men of all time?
Something about them coming and going and going and coming .......?

Well I do! Perhaps that may explain the difference.

Re: You are a braver man than I....

Now, if you are referring to my earlier posting as "macho", let me point out that I was actually trying to be serious. I have sailed (and discussed) with a number of female crew and it is simpoly a fact that most of them look at things from a different viewpoint. Maybe not politically correct but very true. Is it not a fact, for example, that there are fewer female single-handed sailors than male ? There must be a reason for this, right ?

I am not trying to pass judgement, merely stating facts (as I see them).
