I would suggest ss bolts with large washers or similar backing pieces. Also, copper nails through ss will probably be an interesting electrolytic mix.
If going with ss I was going to use flange button head hex bolt, head is larger than the copper nail head and should look fairly neat on the gunwale.
I only thought about copper as it might be more forgiving than ss

In 1988, I had orthopaedic surgery on my knee, and the surgeon was a pioneer of various techniques now in routine use. A patient on the ward I was on had one of the first artificial knees! I gather the main problem was finding materials a) strong enough, b) bio-compatible and c) not likely to corrode in the body!
