On 15 May 2016, the Jester Azores Challenge 2016 will start from Plymouth Breakwater at 1200utc. The contestants in reality are single-handed small boats (between 20’-30’) which will sail independently to the port of Terceira in the Azores. Among these will be long-time SOLer, YBW_PYE_END, who will be sailing his Victoria Frances 26, Fransesca and we will be able to track his progress via a Google Earth kml feed (linked below).

Sailonline will be racing a Twister 28, which was first raced against SOLer CG and her Twister Florence in June 2010, which should keep us in touch with the real challengers.

The Jester Azores Challenge on Sailonline was a truly excellent race as it brought home to those SOLers who have not sailed across oceans in cruiser-yachts, just what a real adventure it can be! Accustomed to TransAt or Pacific crossings in speedy ocean racers, it came as quite a shock to many to realise just how slow a 28ft cruiser-yacht can be! This race was “just” to the Azores from the UK so hats-off to all those sailors who take on such a mission, solo or with families and friends! Our buddy yacht for the event, Francesca slugged it across the Bay of Biscay but the forecast headwinds towards the Azores meant that the challenge, this time anyway, was not going to pan out and she wisely turned back and arrived in homewaters safe and sound.

This race was also the last for one of the racers from the aviation website PPRuNe who form a flotilla for some of Sailonline’s ocean races. Following the death of SOLer Big_Hammer, his boat was jointly skippered In Memoriam to the Azores where a short Parade of Sail saw his flag lowered for the last time.

As for our podium? Once again those who succeed here have shown their true mettle- very well done guys!
