hi all, i was given this boat , it has a lot of history
built in harland and wolff 1943, she was one of three built during the war for a destroyer, the destroyer was lost during the war and the boat was sold.
the last time this boat was in the water was 1992.
she has a morris tvo type engine.
the wood seems hard enough but has dried out alot.
where do i start?
will she swell again?
thinking of turning it into a youth project any advise will be very welcome.

I don't know about the boat...but that roof's going to need some attention!

How deep are your pockets? Anything is possible, but probably not for the amateur. Rainwater inside will have been the biggest killer if it hasn't been watertight.

Looks pretty good, she will swell, but it will take a while to take up fully, get advice from wooden boat owners before that stage. Whats the engine like? any skin fittings? keel stepped masts, check carefully arround the base where it sits on the keel, get a good specialist wood boat surveyor to check it out and draw you up a list of what to do and in what order.

seems to be soild all round below the water line, i took a hammer round the bottom of it and tried to beat a hole in the hull. going to get a survey done.
the engine will require work new seals and a new manifold
i'll keep in touch.

Good luck, with the history and future uses taken into account, it is definitely worth saving.

Before you call in a surveyor go around the inside and have a poke at the lower planking and frames with something sharp. Any rot will most likely be low down in the hull and poking is the way to find it.

harland and wolf isnt that far from me in belfast.

sadly its a shadow of its former self these days though, but its cranes are still one of belfasts landmarks.

She looks sound to me, as compared with my boat when I found her.
Are you somewhere in the NW I almost recognise the house (HH?) in the background.
If you think you have work to do this is what I started with after removing the rot.

NW England. Projects going a bit slow at the moment got a horse box to build for the daughter, then no more till boats in the water.
