I checked and indeed my assumption was wrong - Kipor's IG range does have overload protection.
From the IG range's manual:
Substantial overloading that continuously lights the over- load indicator light(red) may damage the generator. Marginal overloading that temporarily lights the overload indicator light (red) may shorten the service life of the generator.
If the generator is overloaded (in excess of 1.0kVA), or if there is a short in the connected appliance, the output indicator light (green) will go OFF, the overload indicator light (red) will go ON and current to the connected appliance will be shut off.
Still, it seems strange that they would reject a warranty claim for overload damage when the unit is supposed to have overload protection?
