Has Henley gone to the dogs?

Currently moored up in henley and it is full of pissed up idiots jumping off the bridge, and hooray henrys and Henriettas swilling lager and playing loud music from the flotilla of hire boats. Just had one go past towing a naked chap from the painter about 6 foot from the prop. And believe me you don't want to be towed by the painter?

You cant blame Henley town for idiots - especially as there's no regatta or concerts or rewind.
If you move down to SRB's Lawn, you'll find a nicer sort of boater, though it's a longer walk to the pub.
If you ask him niceley and mention me - he might ferry you down to the Highlights Of Henley, which will uprate your status from a normal boater - but it will be for a fee.

Sadly neither the locality or the navigation authority have any control over the unspeakable...

Steve SRB isn't moored at Fawley this year and HRR are allowing their land to be used as parkland with predictable outcomes. They even had to put bins and security men in at Fawley top field just below Phyllis court.

It's technically just a footpath over the land but they are happy for it to be a park so a park it is.

And there are a lot less scullers on the water due to the social distancing thing making the River more available to others in good and bad ways.

We moored up at Farley meadow on our holiday cruise this year, and we were practically the only boat there. We then noticed a security guard patrolling up and down in his car. After speaking to him, he said that basically pretty much every night, groups of young people had been using the field for social gatherings (although not necessarily causing trouble). Even though it was getting dark, we moved on further upstream and moored opposite near Remenham.

If it's not all about proximity to the town then the moorings further down near Temple island on the remenham side (port side bank going upstream) are really nice. Copas (land owner) have recently put in an interesting looking outdoor bar arrangement just up from Hambleden lock. It's a nuisance in terms of light interference approaching the upper layby but might be quite a handy place to get a pint and they do food as well

If we had our traditional summers with rain and wind, all this would not be problem ?

I don't believe that Henley is any worse that it's ever been, I can remember disorder in the Catherine Wheel when it was a Berni Inn decades ago. Having had the joy of looking after Thames-side town pubs for forty years to 2010, it's fair to say that the 'posh' reputations of the likes of Windsor, Maidenhead, Marlow and Henley are countered by the drunken behaviour during the summer and on weekend evenings. In pub land, Abingdon has always been known as 'Little Chicago' after dark and continues to maintain its character.

Moored at the top end of Fawley Meadow (where Steve's barges usually are) Monday week ago. No problems at all. Quite quiet, with a security man sitting in his car most of the day. No kids there that night. On the way up stopped two nights on the Bucks side just below Temple Island. Beautiful spot, deeper than it looks, again £10 a night to Steve. Unless you want to walk into town (it's a long walk), highly recommended.

Yes that mooring just below Temple island on the Culden Faw estate opposite Remenham is nice if you don't want to go into town.

Don't tell everyone
