A nice slick website here with proposals for a temporary ferry terminal outside the Harrods Furniture Repository - https://harrodswharf.com/

This appears to be part of the temporary proposals to get round the closure of hammersmith Bridge for local residents.

Needless to say not everybody is happy about it and I suppose it might take pressure of the bridge consortium if they feel there is a temporary solution........which unfortunately may be a bad thing for boats wanting to get under the bridge without restrictions.

There's only 2 real options if the ferry has to be somewhere near the bridge - Harrods over to the Riverside Studios complex or the School Grounds over to the Waterfront near the pubs or the Furnival Gardens park.

If they want disabled access, then the waterfront near the pubs would require extensive building work. Not sure the school and Furnival gardens are that accessible either (in terms of easy access or restricted mobility access).

Thanks for that.
Population of Hammersmith 190,000.
Population of Richmond on Thames. 195.000.
Hammersmith Bridge 22,000 vehicles a day.
16,000 pedestrians each day.

Vesta . Total membership 300..
Max numbers of boats out at any one time 10 or 20 on good day. ?

If club follows normal age profiles wonder how many actually ever venture out onto the water as opposed to sitting on the riverbank shouting at passing vessels.
On the up side they did allow females , you know actual girls and women, to join the club in 1994......the progressive old devils. :)

Interesting. I live in the borough of Richmond Upon Thames and the talk ( and it’s just that) is that the young chap that owns ‘Harrods’ development is giving over his land FOC.

the issue with the opposite bank seems to be more the charity that uses the bank / lading stage and the fact it teaches young deprived kids how to row / behave and grow in confidence and all that.

the way the local news played it was young entrepreneur who owns a vast development wants to hamper the good work the charity does on the opposite bank by driving a ferry through it !

fact remains people need to get from one side to the other as well as use the river.

It's the obvious solution to the problem.

Why is it people are so hung up about it being really old and really "beautiful".

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and being old is a negative attribute for a bridge, by definition.

Like I said previously the ideal thing would be to get some stupidly rich American to buy it, dismantle and rebuild on their estate for posterity.

Or could it be taken away in pieces and rebuilt on the London Resort down at Swanscombe peninsula?

It looks like a nice bridge for a "great Britain" ghost ride.

The London Resort is this and it looks like it might actually happen...

I wonder what will become of Broadness creek and the acid traps.

Shame this is not in the existing Hammersmith Bridge thread; keeping all the relevant debate in one place.

However.... Whilst this is a generous offer to press into service a currently unused piece of frontage (which will need dredging for any use at or near low water) I am always a cynic on these matters.

The Clipper service currently tops out at Putney Pier. If Harrods' Wharf is regenerated doubtless the extra stop up the Putney Reach would be tempting to the operators and, more importantly, increase the transport links and value, of adjacent properties.

Vesta may have a case that the Clipper service might not improve the rowing experience between Putney and Hammersmith. That's not to say that I am for, or against, the potential build. Just that Vesta may have seen this in a similar light. The rowing clubs can't paddle that much further upstream, as they soon enter the Hammersmith exclusion zone anyway, so why would they look at just the new ferry crossing as a concern?

The bridge, like many of us, is past its use by date. Many architecturally pleasing and sometimes listed pubs are being demolished and replaced by modern buildings so why not this old, useless bridge?

It needs someone with leadership skills to take charge, knock a few heads together and start moving in the obvious direction!
It is by no means impossible to rig temporary supports for the existing structure to at least allow pedestrian and cyclists above and marine traffic below while they get on with the replacement.
It has to happen, and has to be paid for!
So come on - someone get a grip!
