Then there's the use of a mutt as an anemometer. I saw a Beaufort scale once that offered F9 - dogs blown off their chains. F11 - masters blown after their dogs.

Get dogs of different sizes and you could have
F5 - Chiahuahuas blown off their leads,
F6 - Scotties blown off their leads
F7 - Spaniels go missing
F8 - labs
F9 - Alsatians
F10 - Rottweilers
F11 - Great Danes
F12 - Newfies

Also useful for temperature... as in a 'two dog night' ... when you need a pair to keep you warm.
