Sailorman has been kind enough to lend me his mooring at Ramsholt on the River Deben.

I intend to launch Sirenia on the Mayday Bank Holiday.
Thinking about using the slip a Felixstowe Ferry.
Has any one experience of this?

Is The Ramsholt Arms any good?

Which other Forumites are moored on the Deben?

Any recommendations?

I am sure other Forum members would have raised this if its likely to be a problem, but Ramsholt is at the end of a maze of narrow lanes with as I recall some tight right-angle bends. It sounds like you are going to be towing, that is why I mention it.

We are in the Tidemill, up in Woodbridge, and scoot past Ramsholt from time to time trying to do the "across the sill and across the bar before the ebb really sets in" run!

Thanks for the tour of your domain this evening.
You will have a good set-up when they are finished.

See you in Ostende if not before.

Where to Launch an Evolution 25 on the Deben?

I would think twice about launching at Felixstowe Ferry because the tide does run fairly quickly across the slip. If a conventional boat is launched it has rudder and keel ready for action and I would guess the engine will be started before the boat has left the trolley so it can manouvre to a mooring.

I assumee you would be letting your road trailer go slowly down the slip but your rudder might not be fully down and your keel cannot go down until you are free of the trailer. Your boat in that state is more like a very large dinghy and would be difficult to control if there is any current and/or wind.

It would be easier to do the job somewhere more sheltered, ideally where there is a dock/pontoon next to the slip so the boat can be controlled by warps. I cannot remember whether there is a slip at Eversons, or indeeed anywhere else at Woodbridge.

Titchmarsh has a good slip suitable for your boat, but that is a longer road journey. Suffolk Yacht Harbour would also be suitable BUT don't use a vehicle on the slip as it will slip...into the drink! ( there is a cable to hitch up to your vehicle). Job is best done by 3 or 4 blokes who know what they are doing.

Re: Where to Launch an Evolution 25 on the Deben?

O.k. thanks for that.

We will use Suffolk yacht harbour.

We have launched there 3 times last year.
We do take the Range Rover down the slip.
The steel cable is only rated for 1 ton.
We are 2 ton plus the trailer.
We have her on the end of a long rope of ours.
We go down with the Range rover on low range 1st and with the brakes controlling the decent.
Has worked so far.
I usualy do it with my son and 1 or 2 of his mates.

The ramsholt arms is one of the few places you can get a good sunset on the Deben and must be the only West facing pub on the river. I agree about the beer being good.
Harbourmaster is very good and has a 22 footer off the hard where he can watch the world go by - what a life.
You have chose well, young Skywalker.
Only downside is that it's quite a drive from anywhere north of Ipswich. It's a good 15-20 minues drive from Melton/woodbridge to the quay.

Robertsons Boatyard at Woodbrige have a very good slip. It may be worth contacting them to see if they would let you launch. You would need to use it near the top of the tide.

Thank you very much for that suggestion.

I have contacted them and we are booked in to launch on Saturday 5th May on the afternoon tide.

That's great. It's the same slip they launch much larger boats on using their cradle, is at a reasonably shallow angle (unlike Levington!), is not particularly slippery, and has a quay you can moor against at the point the boat leaves the trailer.

They're also very nice people indeed, and craftsmen.

Re: Where to Launch an Evolution 25 on the Deben?

I was in the area this afternoon and dropped in to have a look.

The slip we are to use is what they call the small slip.
It seems fine.
The access to the yard is a bit twisty, bumpy and narrow.
It could be a bit difficult if someone parks in the wrong place.
I am sure that we can over come that.
The chap I met seemed friendly and the place has a very relaxed air about it.

I also dropped into Ramsholt and met George, the Harbour Master.
He has pointed out the mooring and told me about dinghy storage.
We also had a good chat about life etc.

It was a lovey afternoon and the pint was very nice to.
Can't wait to get Sirenia down there.
