The article appears to be yet another fine example of the integrity of the fourth estate...
Ohh, the yacht shouldn't have been there because of covid lockdown rules.

More on this subject here: P&O : le Pride of Kent a percuté un voilier | Mer et Marine

Other than another account of what happened, the article simply reminds people that a curfew/lockdown is still in force in France and that sailing is only allowed from 06H00 to 19H00.

Foreign craft on passage had best stay outside the French 12 mile limit then. Oh, they were about a dizain miles from Calais... It is a bit like saying that a car on the hard shoulder that was run into by a lorry shouldn't have been travelling.

It was a Dutch yacht according to the article

Just open it in Chrome it will auto-translate. It does not say that the colregs are suspended do to Covid. It does not say where the Dutch boat was transiting too. Is inncocent passage suspended if the Dutch vessel was simply passing through, can they suspend "Innocent passage"?

hang on lets get this right so do all ships have to stop between 1600 and 1900 or just the once with sail ?

Curfew rules apply to all leisure craft - sailing (and motoring) only allowed between 0600 & 19H00.
Provided your boat is within a 10km radius of your residence.
No limit on the distance you can sail at sea, though in many cases, the 10km rule and the hours of curfew mean that you are limited to daysails from/to your berth.
The 10km rule is due to be scrapped and the curfew hours relaxed early next week.
We'll have to wat for little Napoleon's address to the nation tomorrow.

I have no idea who owns it, probably a bank, but it is a Cypriot ship. Used to be a British ship, registered in Dover, as was the rest of the P&O cross channel fleet. No longer.

So it is no longer owned by P & O then???
P&O is still the beneficial owner. Many ships are "owned" by single-ship companies that act as the registered owner for flag, tax or obscurity reasons. All of P&O's UK ferries have a Cypriot company (P&O Ferries Cyprus Limited) as the registered owner.
Figuring out the ultimate owner in shipping is a whole world of fun when you take into account single-ship companies, many of which are shelf-companies in jurisdictions that don't require or allow ownership declarations. The Panama Papers were an interesting read for people in shipping.

If it was 18km about from Calais it may well have been in international waters (12miles = 19km). Which would make sense for a dutch boat transiting, but as others have asked; is one obliged by current covid rules to not stray inside the international limit?

Considering the yacht wasn't showing any nav lights then maybe it shouldn't have been there

..

Surely P & O is a British company ( although owned by a Dubai shareholder) So fr..s are not in this unless one was driving the ferry.
I blame BREXIT - Everyone else does.
English officer, Quartermaster and lookout on the bridge at the time of the incident, all suspended while investigation takes place
