Sense at last.

Surely you mean Sense too late.

What about all the traders that have already incurred costs travelling and setting up.

Plus the local hotels and restaurants with bookings that will now be cancelled after they've refused bookings for others travelling to the city for other reasons because they were full of boat show vendors and visitors.

No refunds on tickets either.
Just a credit against a ticket for the 2021 show which won't be issued until the 2021 tickets go on sale, giving them time to put the separate company running the show into liquidation so the credit codes will never be issued.

The BBC says that the local council took the decision to cancel the shows at 1830 yesterday (Southampton's BOATS2020 cancelled over virus fears hours before gates open Southampton's BOATS2020 cancelled over virus fears hours before gates open). Therefore not totally surprising to find a website still live a couple of hours later.
However, the organisers need to get their act in gear and remember the frustrated contracts laws. They have been prevented from fulfilling their side of the contract and no matter what their terms and conditions say they should be giving refunds to those asking for them.

People in business make commercial decisions based on the environment they work in, some they win some they lose, that is how it goes. We call it capitalism.

Why would any trader would consider going to an event like this in the middle of a pandemic? I would be interested to hear from any of them.

As as a cash and time rich customer my view of the business environment of attending such an event, I do love the Southampton Boat Show, was there was there little advantage of attending such an event this year.

It would have been interesting to see the ticket sales were like.

I looked at exhibiting but was put off by the promise of an 18% refund of the fees if the show were cancelled. A lot of exhibitors are going to be rather miffed.

Quite, the big boys can wear it, its the small specialist suppliers and service providers that will be hit, the stand fee is one thing, the travel, accomodation and other costs of putting on a stand which quickly add up are pissed to the wind.

Feeling quite relieved here that I wasn't in a position to exhibit or even plan to visit as I'm at risk. This is very sad for the smaller businesses though, they'll have incurred a lot of costs in the last weeks as they hire vans, book accommodation, hire staff etc. going to shows is a big expense for us.

But why did organisers go ahead? in March I was at the Stockholm show and it was cancelled the day after I went, METS was cancelled some time ago and that's a November show. I guess they were feeling optimistic?

Exactly. It would have been quite reasonable to pull the plug back in March. Dozens of other organisations did.

They did pull the plug, the SBS2020 is postponed to 2021.

This was a different separate show, Boats2020, set up a while later, smaller and specifically designed to meet social distancing requirements and an opportunity for traders to exhibit their wares for the only time this year.

I'm not sure it should ever have gone ahead, but do feel for the retailers, some of who saw it as a bit of a lifeline.

I applaud the exhibitors who had the optimism to go ahead with this show and am very sad that it had to be cancelled - most probably by the selfish behaviour of the general public going about their lives with no care or regard for others..

I would have thought the probable attendees of this show were in the main of the older generation who reportedly do respect the guidance on social distancing etc. But these are strange times indeed.

I hope for the best for those who have invested in this show and will now loose out.

It's a daft time to try to run a group event but ...

(1) Although it seems clear that infections are rising, it's only been clear that that's the case for three days or so and a possibility for about a week. Give that the show had permission to run, there really weren't grounds for enforcing cancellation until very recently:

(2) It may well be better for exhibitors to have it canceled by diktat than simply by their deciding not to go or by the organisors deciding not to run it. The insurance and frustrated contract situations are both probably much easier when their was no choice in the matter. In fact, I suspect that the organisers will be quite glad they were told to close and didn't have to make a decision themselves.

I run an organisation which had several residential centres booked around the UK this summer. It worked out much more easily for us to wait until the centres were forbidden to have us; had we cancelled early and on spec it would have been our decision and our contractual liability to pay. As it was we rolled all the bookings over to next year and everyone is happy.

You live in your oldie bubble , I know you live in the back and beyond and make such accurate statements which you gain from the daily mail but in the real world were civilisation is strong and active there are plenty of the older generation flaunting the rules as well , and you will find a boat show atracks all age groups as the scottish one shows , in fact it is actively encouraged, as this is the future customers ,

You know nothing...

I would not use the daily wail to wipe my arse

I do live in ‘the back of beyond’ by your reckoning but have been in englandshire for the past 3 weeks and so have recent first hand experience of the way folk are observing, or not, the guidance between the two places.
Generally the younger people are the less care they take.

Oldies aren’t in any way perfect citizens of course ,but they do - especially in the back of beyond whereI live - respect the guidance.

Scotland's Boat Show was postponed/cancelled on 7th August. While applauding the organisers of England's Show for trying to hold it, brinkmanship doesn't always bear fruit.:(
With the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, we are disappointed to finally announce the postponement of Scotland’s Boat Show 2020 (SBS20), due to take place this October.
As we are experiencing an exceptional demand for boats due to the fall of foreign travel, our focus is now on planning for a special outdoor ‘Pop Up’ Boat Sales Weekend here at Kip Marina on the weekend of 9th-11th October with a wide range of new and pre-owned boats from all of the major Scottish dealers.

This will be a no-frills weekend with digital ticketing, bookable viewings and full social distancing and hygiene protocols in place to deliver a Covid secure event that will showcase boats for every budget.
The postponement of SBS20 is particularly frustrating as an enormous amount of planning and hard work from the team here at Kip Marina went to provide a special “Year of Coasts and Water 2020” Boat Show including the spectacular ‘River of Light’ event programme.

I wonder if Kip's Boat Show will go ahead...
