Meant as a helpful hint; MY 2004 VP 5.7 GXI ( GM engine) had a flimly plasic bodied distributor. I repaired some damage to the bits used for clamping the cap on with brass bits. Those mesh screens were there, but to be honest were not as complete as they should have been.

I think I have the same diz as yours Graham..terrible things, if its the flat spider looking cap. famous for causing issues on all these mpi and gxi engines. I have went through at least 4 of them in 6 years. One of them failed right out the box too.

I think mine has already been changed to be honest , but id still prefer a electronic HEI unit as generally they are bullet proof and very reliable
