1982. After having burglaries at my garage and off my boat I started with a small hand engraver engraving my name on all my equipment, but would still take home my echo sounder, ship to shore radio and other stuff. I then had a burglary at home and amongst what they stole was my boat equipment, which was engraved.
They caught the burglar as when they were doing a search of the home of a well known burglar they came across a bag with all my engraved boat items in it.
So it does work.
I still engrave things.

My father was a dentist. Any break in at the surgery was potentially very expensive if they damaged equipment. The police suggested he always leave a bit of easy to find cash in a drawer. This meant the thieves had an easy time and left other stuff alone and departed more speedily. It also meant they were less inclined to vandalism.

It might be possible to exercise a similar psychological approach to petty boat thefts. It won't deter the outboard motor collection gangs though.

Oh, it worked by the way. He had three burglaries in 30 years and each time they just took the cash. No damage to other kit. I accept that dental kit is not exactly tradeable goods unlike boat stuff.
Perhaps leave a packet of Viagra on the chartroom table, they grab the packet, take one and rush home to try it out. (sorry to make a joke out of a serious subject)

So sorry to see this has happened to you Cindy, youve been through a lot the past few years too, bad things always happen to honerable decent people in life wheras the scrots get away with it. I hope the police take it seriously and also that your insurance covers your losses

at our club we have our boats on swing moorings and none of us lock the boats as arsholes get in no matter what and cause more damage breaking in. but i often worry that ill come back to missing electronics or batteries, especially after i upset one of the tugs on the thames a year ago.
