Tubby 36 locked through with us at Mutford a couple of weeks ago and made it to the Royal Norfolk, but had to wait for the right state of the tide as the rail bridge immediately below the lock was broke! Take it you would use Haddiscoe New Cut where the bridge should have headroom of around 24 ft. When you clear Mutford radio Lowestoft Port Control and they will give you a bridge opening time although they may let you through tagging behind commercial vessels. Busy and entertaining place it is.

Not a chance at the moment. The railway bridge on the seaward side of Mutford lock is unable to swing, and the Harbour bridge in Gt Yarmouth, your other route to sea is out of action too .
Bridge update from the Broads Authority
Sounds a bit like the Thames tideway.

What is it with bridges? And why are they needed? All we want to do is go along on water.

Pretty certain it is the only route out at the moment. ??? Assume no draft problem ?

Used that route in and out. No draft problems, the sounder read an average of 8 - 10 ft under the keel. You will, ,of course have to negotiate Reedham and Somerleyton railway bridges, but if the weather is cooler they should be OK, but worth a phone call. The latter bridge is between Haddiscoe and Mutford Lock. Very obliging chap in the 'signal box' who has to work it around the trains. There is countdown timer on this bridge.
Worth taking a Visitors berth at RN&SYC in Lowestoft, and fuelling at visitors rate which was 55p/ltr when we were there. Mooring for us @ 8 metres was £24 per day. There is an M&S food up the High St and an Asda, which your chum will see transiting Lake Lothing. On leaving seek permission from Lowestoft Port Control...This bit is in the ECP of course!
As an aside watch for 'Pot Markers' between Lowestoft and Harwich. We noticed quite a few there and back and also some off Harwich Shelf Buoy into Shotley, this was late July into 1st week August. Hope this is useful.

The problem with the route to seavia Oulton Broad lies with Carlton swing bridge , on Lake Lothing. It can't swing at present ! The av. air draught at HW is about 4.5 m.
(BTW, this is a mechanical issue and NOT related to weather/ temperature )

I spoke with the lock operators on Thursday last week they said the swing bridge was operational but they needed 24hrs notice to swing it

Went under at low water this morning 7am there was a good 6m it’s a great shame there are no marker boards to tell you the draft couldn’t cost a lot to install
