Hello
I’m looking to buy a new or replace chain/ rope on my anchor. I say buy as I think the 5kg one with the boat may be too small (18ft fletcher cruisette). Can anyone advise how long the rope should be - will not be venturing more than a few miles out of Cardiff and perhaps occasionally a few miles out of Swansea.
A relative newbie but anything you can share to build up my knowledge would be very much appreciated - thanks

A few miles out could be very deep water indeed. Few people unless you are a wreck fisher would ever anchor that deep and a drogue / sea anchor would suffice. I'd say have enough length for max 20m depth which in your case would be 1.5 x your boat in chain the heavier the better and (5x min) recommended 7xdepth in rode which is (100) 140m
Hauling that in could be laborious so learn the alderney technique and ensure your rope is at least 10mm thick not for strength but so you can handle it. I'd suggest at least a 10 kg anchor.
