Depends what type of light fitting is up there.

If the fitting is original I suspect that it will require replacing as the lens does get 'damaged over the years and reduce light output to very little.

Make life easier and the light more visible, get a hanging LED lantern and hang in the fore triangle, it will light the foredeck area as well as being clearly visible to anyone and not confused by distant shore lights. If you still feel you need a mast top light, fit a new lamp or bulb next time the mast is down. ?

Yes, a top anchor light is the best way to get hit in the dark if you are anchoring in the sort of place where small fishing boats or late arriving yachts come in. A masthead light is superb if the thing about to hit you is two miles away.
