Not many shtered anchorages available in an easterly .On the chart the bit of beach from Aberavon to Baglan Bay looks as if it should offer shelter from East or North east wind.

Anyone tried it?

Just a possibility as a passage anchorage . Using Swansea marina just to get a few hours kip is a lot of locking in and out and you may want to leave before the Tawe lock opens in the morning.

outside the lock probably ok on neaps but hardly any water on springs

Just west of Baglan bay, on the western side of the river at Briton Ferry (under the big M4 bridge) is a small inlet of some kind where you can see the tops of masts as you drive along the M4 westbound. Maybe that is a simpler option of shelter than the Tawe marina?

Thats Monkstone Cruising clubs marina by the sound of it .I would think they would accept the odd visitor but not just someone wanting to sleep for a few hours while waiting for the next tide.

Aberavon Beach in east and northeast winds can provide good shelter ,but beware of the swell as it is a well known surfing beach. On big springs the tide will go out past the North pier. The entrance to the River Afan does provide shelter but you need to get your tidal depths right and ensure there is no swell running. The Baglan end of the beach is not so protected. Both rivers dry Afan and Neath, with a club marina at the Neath - and + 2 hrs HW. It would be much easier and quicker for a short stop in easterlies to go to Swansea and go on the pontoon outside the lock. Speak to the Tawe lock master about this. Finally be aware that both rivers have occasional shipping at or near HW so you will need a good anchor light. Pilot boats and coasters will also have AIS.
