Upwind boat speed equals true wind speed

Just thinking back to the 1st outing of this season. Just before this pic we were sailing in 15 knots under the blue sky off to the left. Just after we were flat on our side as 30+ came through… Consequences for pushing a bit hard and not dropping the kite were a slightly wet bowman and a bit...

Upwind boat speed equals true wind speed

If I think of all the times I have pushed the boat "beyond the point of reason" and the consequences I suffered... Or didn't.... It makes me pretty sure that a multihull is not for me.

Comfortable cruising at 10 knots on a budget?

Other than the fact I have a plumbed in head it looks very similar to the interior of my 1010. Off cruising for 4 or 5 days next week with the ankle biters... Sure it won't be as luxurious as my Dad's old Dufour 40, but I'm not expecting it to be purgatory either.

Comfortable cruising at 10 knots on a budget?

You could, for example, buy this Grand Surprise for less than £50k. https://www.yachtworld.co.uk/yacht/2006-archambault-grand-surprise-8317622/ And given decent breeze off the wind you will definitely fulfill the speed requirement. And it has an interior, but enough of an interior? That's...

Comfortable cruising at 10 knots on a budget?

That's how you'd work if you were commissioning a new build maybe. But not when perusing yachtworld etc. If "fast" is your key criteria then relatively few will meet it. So you're better off looking for fast boats then judging by interior. Only the OP will know what sort of interior they...

Comfortable cruising at 10 knots on a budget?

I don't think it's odd at all. It's a perfectly reasonable question. I think a lot of people are often guilty of assuming that everyone derives pleasure from cruising in the same way that they do. That's really not the case, and plenty of people, seemingly including the OP, and definitely...

Comfortable cruising at 10 knots on a budget?

The RTI website claims the rhum line to be 50.1 miles. Last year we went round in 8 hours 2 minutes, which gives a 6.25 VMG average. Which given the start was into the tide until we were nearly at Yarmouth, and that Yarmouth to the Needles was the only bit of fair tide we had all day, I think...

I can certainly see that logic... If I see you in Hamble this weekend I may well buttonhole you for a chat!

    IRC for cruisers

That's interesting. I will be very interested in what sort of competitive life you get out of them. Whilst the 3DI is pricey, the competitive life does seem to be pretty good... What I've done is have the previous main and J1 recut, and we use them for the "lesser" events, saving the best 3DI...

    IRC for cruisers

Yes, all of this. The good news is that IRC is doing a pretty good job of keeping boats competitive, not perfect, but also not terrible. And the weird silver lining of there being literally no small racing boats rating less than 1.000 available to buy now is that the lowest rating band is...

    IRC for cruisers

My own view is that the era of cruiser racers is over. The divide between what is sold as a family cruiser now, and what is sold as a racer is so stark. If you look at the creature comforts available in something like a 35 foot AWB it takes a very particular type of person to turn their back...

New IRC rules on number of headsails.

But what happens if the forecast is light airs in the morning building to 20+ in the afternoon? Which is not uncommon....

New IRC rules on number of headsails.

Honestly this new headsail rating thing is getting silly. The IRC nationals (which this year is at the Poole regatta) have a NOR that allows you to change the sails you carry every day. The normal rules that would apply without a specific NOR are that the sails have to stay the same for the...

    IRC for cruisers

My view is that if it's required by the race rules, or the offshore special regs, then it's my lookout. And lifejackets are required, so there is a full set, with in date servicing, on the boat at all times. Some of the crew have their own and prefer them, and that's fine, but if they forget...

I would absolutely agree that a multi makes way more sense as an “Everyman” foiler than a mono.

    Americas Cup

Pretty sure carbon fibre is fairly recyclable? I get the point, but in reality the resources put into 6 cup boats are tiny compared to, for example, the global plastic straw industry... What I kind of struggle with is the idea that any part of the tech being developed for these boats is...

In my experience moaning about boat differences (real or perceived) in one designs is just as prevalent as rating moans in IRC!
