When I came back to the boat a couple of weeks ago relative humidity was less than 30% despite being set to the thumbs up second highest humidity setting which used to maintain 50%
When I left I set it to the maximum humidity level 4 drops. I got back yesterday and it was again very low.

My insurance renewal documents are web based and include a big document giving recommendations for boat maintenance.
Under spars and rigging it recommends that all split pins and circlips are replaced each season, bent back properly and re taped.
Do you think that this reasonable!??
I will try...
It’s nice to see the moon phases on the 2024 calendar. A glance at the moon phases on it tells me roughly what the state of tide and tide time is so when a mate calls or swmbo proposes doing something in a particular period I can see what limitations it is likely to put on my sailing options...
Have you seen the episode of Saving Lives at Sea where a 40 foot yacht is flooded knee deep in water after a square window came out near the bow ?
Any ideas how this is possible and how to test them?
It’s a good job the boat was not seriously offshore because two men with buckets were not...
I set up a nice little rig to run redlyme solution through the sea water side of my heat exchanger earlier today. It worked great. After 2 hours I drained the redlyme into a container and flushed through.
The question arises about what to do with the redlyme. Two litres were diluted to half...
I am going to replace my old Cobra hand held VHF.
I sail all year and have found that the battery will not work properly in cold weather. A previous thread mentioned to keep the radio inside my oilies and this helps but is not ideal. The battery really is weak
Has anyone identified a cold...
I have been told that it is a bad idea to fill up the diesel tank before winter. This is against conventional wisdom but seems scientifically sound.
Modern diesel is unstable with veggie oil and fats in it. It has been found that after a few months shelf life it deposits sludge in the tank...
Was sailing earlier today and came across a huge dead whale about a mile off Tynemouth. I called the coastguard who said they were aware of it and were waiting for it to wash ashore! As the wind was offshore said I expect it will take a while!
There were loads of seagulls pecking at it.

My YM30 has a vetus strainer and in the past I have sometimes struggled to seal up the strainer which needs to hold a slight vacuum.
It occurred to me that plastics such as the polycarbonate screw on lid expand a relatively large amount with temperature.
To get the lid off I put a rag onto...
Just hauled out and after pressure washing there are a few rashes of small white barnacle remains. Like a tiny thin white patch left by each one. Any tips on easy removal of these?
Sitzpinkler is a great German word for blokes who sit down to pee. It’s slightly derogatory.
I encourage all my crew to be sitzpinklers because there is no doubt that ,at best , stand up peeing results into a small low head results a fine spray settling onto the various pipes and surfaces...
BBC says cruise ship refused permission to dock in Adelaide because of fungus on hull. It sounds more like normal fouling- can anyone enlighten me about this fungus?
I have a heavy - 8 diopter prescription and struggle with binoculars as I can’t seem to compensate with the adjustment on the knurled wheel adjuster.
Has anyone in the same situation found a good solution?
Can anyone give me a heads up about chartering in Turkey post pandemic
- good areas to visit and get to

I am going to get her pressure washed next week and want to change the prop anode. This needs thread lock. I only have 2 hours out of the water. Does anyone know if blue loctite washes out or another way of sorting the problem without buying an original anode with a pre prepared coated bolt ?
