Water Taxi - Portsmouth Harbour

So far as I am aware there is no Water Taxi as such in Portsmouth Harbour. I believe the Hardway Sailing Club operate a launch for the benefit of their members to reach the boats moored in Bomb Ketch Lake, Spyder Lake and Fareham Channel.

yup - maybe we have identified a niche in the market ...... though I do remember 'j butlers' (boats) running something like that decades ago before they built larger baby tugs.

do you rekon there is a call for such a service ?

I was thinking the same regarding niche market but Pompy Harbour is BIG. (Not like Cowes or Yarmouth) Where would you run from; how would you charge (distance related?); etc. I suspect you would spend a lot of your time running about like a blue-ended fly empty most of the time.

I am sure that if it was a viable proposition the Butcher Boys would have had it sewn up by now.

Does anyone know if Poole has a similar service?

Gosport Boat yard run a water taxi for their berth holders....I don't thik they'll take casual visitors tho', unless they have a visitor's berth. You'll just have to use a mrina and pay their extortion...at least you'l be able to walk ashore.....

Falmouth/Carrick Roads is as big and there is a taxi service.

It is a fast dory with a cover, I seem to recall, but it is quite pricey and of course, the inevitable delays must be encountered when it is at the 'other' end of the harbour. Can't tell how succesful it is.

The only water taxis I know of are Gosport Boat Yard's and RNSA's, which are purely drop-off and collection services for their berthholders. Not sure if Wicor Marine do one for theirs, but I've never heard of an actual water taxi service. I reckon Haslar to Fareham would cost a few quid!

Who are the Butcher Boys??!

not easy to find on the web .....

they are small boat operators based in the camber, old portsmouth. family run outfit with a few small boats and low bollard pull tugs, now expanded a bit - see here
look down the page a bit

ppl are correct though when you think how large pompey harbour is .............. to make a taxi boat viable it would have to net at least 150 squid a day (presuming the licence issued by the port wasnt astronomical) ....... so thats a lot of custom on a daily basis

when you take the speed restriction of 6 kts and the milage from say the camber/spinnaker quay to dolpiin/gosport its ok, but put in port solent, and the other yot havens (with pontoon access) on the gosport side all the way up to fareham/porchester its not a good prospect ... IMO of course

anyone here miss/see a need for a water taxi in pompey waters ?

inside the harbour ? mmmm ok, I stand corrected but in my day it was 6 ........ progress huh /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

makes a bit of difference for water taxies I would venture /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
