"Windy" weather phone app

Ahh this has reminded me

Which Windy app/service are you all using.

Until my last cruise to Ibiza, I thought there was only one Windy App
The one that is essentially the same as this URL - www.windy.com
Or this app on Android
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.windyty.android&hl=en
Or this app on iPhone
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/windy-com/id1161387262

But .........................
There is a MUCH better one out there - here is a link to it on Android devices:-
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=co.windyapp.android&hl=en
I know it is available in the iPhone - Look for this Logo

The app takes a lot of "getting used to" but it is great for working out the forecast for an anchorage.
You search/select your location and store it in your favourites.
Then your location pops up - click on the time that you want to view and this is the kind of thing you will see:-

WINDY.resized.jpg

You then slide your finger along the time line (the vertical grey bar in the lower half of the above image) and the arrows on the graphical top part of the display swing round providing the most important information - wind speed/direction and swell/waves direction and height.

It is a truly great addition to cruising and staying out at anchor.
And from our experience this year - extremely accurate.

Unfortunately, it is expensive - I paid £39 for it and I think that is probably a subscription.
But worth every penny.
I think it is available on a months free trial but I think you have to pay and get it refunded if you don't like it.
I was on anchor at the time when a yachtie friend showed it to me and I just wanted it to work.
I will definitely be using it a lot.
There is a mode which is similar to the free Windy but this app is way better than the free version.

Maybe I've got this all wrong and you are all on this alternative app anyway.
But it is confusing.

The compare function for the different forecast sources is really good too.

When all the lines are similar.....the forecast is spot on :)

Windy.com (free/red icon) does that too.

The free one is OK for the overall picture but when you want to get a more localised forecast, the paid app comes out top.
I've always remember Frank Singleton and his comments about being aware of these internet systems for local forecasts.
But the paid version explained above allows you to make informed decisions, knowing the direction/height of swell and direction/strength of the wind.
You can then make your own mind up using the local land features etc.
For example in that screen shot that I took this morning shows it would be very nice in Es Calo today and over the next few days.
Running my finger along the time line I can see that the swell stays from the SW and the wind remains light.
You can probably get the same outcome from the free version but the paid one is so much easier and more accurate.

.
Normally I use Windfinder Pro + whatever the local weather app is in the country (MeteoConsult in France) but the Windy app is really cool. Love the graphics. Thanks for the heads up

I use the pro version of this, think it was a one off £5 payment a couple of years ago. I find the GFS source best for my location so tend to stick to it although occasionally use the compare if something out of the ordinary is forecast.

Mike, I'm not sure what your new subscription windy.app (blue icon) does that the original windy.com (red icon) can't do. You can get wind and swell direction for any location and swipe to get the changes over time. You can also compare the various weather models.

Oh Dear - Oh Dear - Oh Dear - Oh Dear
:o:o:o:o

After Pete's post above, I thought I should understand more about the various versions of Windy.
So, after a lot of hunting about, I found that windy.com is what we have been referring to as the FREE version.
windy.app is an entirely different application.
Both have their own desktop websites and are available on the Apple and Android as separate Apps
I'm afraid that I got "suckered in" thinking I was upgrading from Windy to a Pro version.

WINDY.COM
windy.com is free

WINDY.APP
I believe that windy.app is also free but they make you upgrade to a Pro and I believe there is a Pro+

NOTE - THESE APPS ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT

Going back to the free (windy.com), you will see this note in their FAQ pages

Have you been tricked by the phony Windy app? This is how to get your money back.

We have received many questions about payment for our app. However our App Windy.com is completely FREE.
An unofficial, Russian made "Windy" App mimics the look and feel of our app and wants you to pay for basically nothing. It has significantly fewer functionalities than official Windy.com app.
Users of the Russian made Windy app complain that they have been tricked by this app and asked to pay for it. They are now asking how to get their money back on different platforms, including iTunes Store, Google Play store, and this Community forum.

So, if you want to claim a refund I suggest that you visit this page where they give you all the links and notes:-
https://community.windy.com/topic/9...indy-app-this-is-how-to-get-your-money-back/2

HOWEVER - IS IT ALL BAD?
So, I thought I would have a really close look at both the apps.
The paid windy.app is really quite good but as Pete says, the free windy.com does everything that the paid one does - and more.
windy.app does present some of the pages in a nicer way and it animates the forecast for a particular location really neatly.
windy.app also has an option for hourly forecasts which I can't find on windy.com.
But is that a reason to pay £39.99 pa?
There are probably other features that the paid windy.app offers but I feel that I've been conned so I think I will be cancelling my subscription and looking for a refund.
I think I'm on a months free trial anyway.

Sorry about the shouting in this post but I think it is important to know these differences.

If anyone thinks that I've got this wrong, please say so.
And I apologise to anyone who took my advice and bought windy.app thinking (like me) that it was an upgrade of windy.com

That all said, I'm beginning to think it would be helpful to have both available.
It IS nice to be able to predict the conditions at hourly intervals even though the forecast models are at larger intervals.
And we had good experience/accuracy using windy.app this year.

It will be interesting to hear what others think.
