I know that this theme has come up before, but I was just looking for some up-to-date references. I have just been quoted just under 1500 euros for a new sprayhood for my SHE 33. I have the frame, so just need the canvas work. This was rather more than I was expecting. Does this sound reasonable, or a bit on the expensive side? The guy is local, and has a good reputation.

That's ridiculous if it's a standard sprayhood, with no frame. I had a new one made earlier this year, a fairly large one, with all new fittings. Had three quotes, all around £700. All but one was plus VAT, i went for the one with no VAT and it's a very nice sprayhood.

Where's the boat based ?

Hi Paul, Thanks for the reply. The boat is in Spain, so not much hope of using your guy! There are others around here, so I think I will go for a couple more quotes!

I used Sabre Sails in Swansea. £375 and made using my old one as a template. Worked really well and very happy with the result. They also made a stack pack at about the same price.

There's a firm on ebay who will make from your old sprayhood. As they are a legitimate company ebay require company details to be provided from which you can easily contact the company direct and discuss your needs.

I had one made ;last year and like Paul quotes were around £700/750 plus VAT. In addition I paid quite a bit extra for some special thread for the sewing that will apparently never breakdown.... 10 years will tell!

I dont have the old one to use as a template. Previous owner must have thrown it away. On reflection, could this be an explanation for the high price? The fact that he has to make a template?

If you want a benchmark price for a quality product you might contact Tecsew in Gosport or look at their website . They have a service to supply canvas to fit existing frames so might be worth some research with them to at least explore options.

Had a new one made two years ago by Dolphin Sails at Hamble using existing frame. Came round and made templates and then came and fitted . The result is excellent and widely admired and this was £810 inc VAT.

Why not contact one of the online makers for example

They may have done one for your boat before.

I had a sprayhood made by a local sailmaker and about £700 at today's prices including measuring up as the last one had been "bunged on" and fitted where it touched!

But the frame would almost certainly be different, so a hood made for the same model boat would not necessarily fit, no?

I have a new sprayhood being fitted tomorrow on my Moody 44. 658euros + VAT in Greece. Frame is already there and he came to measure from that. It will have an opening panel in the front for breeze to come through. The person has just made one for my neighbour in the marina and it's very good.

Not in my case. My new sprayhood was completely different to the old one. Changed from three tubes to two, which made it higher, all new deck fittings, trip out to measure up and quote, trip out to template, trip out to fit.

Personally I would try others than cj marine. They were the suppliers for Bavaria who now use Tecsew. Speak to a few dealers though as they have far more hoods and cockpit covers fitted than most who post here I suspect.

my boat came with a sprayhood and stack pack. lookin at replys i never realised they cost so much. seems a rip off, especially when the old one can be used as a template saving the person making one a lot of time
