12mm long, 6mm diameter, to go into holes in fibreglass stringers and hold plywood headlining up.

You can usually screw straight into GRP. If the panels have been recovered you could stick them up with small squares of 3M dual lock (heavy duty version).

You know, after looking at the pics in your links, I can't see anything that remotely resembles the OP's items.

So what are they.

I initially thought they were interscrews but looking closer they are not like Pul Rainbow says.

They look like plastic may be nylon so could be some kind of blind expanding insert that expands with the insertion of a self tapper.

The one I posted are not the exact same design but is similar if my conclusion is correct and the ones I posted are a modem design and there are a very large range of designs so the OP could find a type that would do the job.

Someone posted a square design that acts in a similar way as the ones I posted. If a screw is used square would be better than round. Round would be used where a puchin design would be used on would work OK.

Have you found one of the same design to help the OP ?

They appear to have a variety of names, interscrews being but one. They are also called sex bolts, for vaguely obvious reasons, or barrel nuts/bolts. I have also heard them called Chicago nuts (though in a distant memory cell - these were used in the publication industry to hold manuscripts together). Interscrews, barrel nuts, chicago bolts, sex nuts - might all be similar - but might have subtle differences.

I could tell you where to source them here, in Oz - but that's not much use to you :(

And for light relief - if you translate the Chinese name for some/one of these they are called

'Mother and Son' bolts.

They are just fancy rawlplugs. Self tappers work well in GRP. Make sure to drill the correct sized clearance hole.

Indeed, Ithink the OP wants to use them as essentially a rawlplug.
The existing holes will be too big for self tappers.

A plastic plaster board fixing might work, a normal wal plug or part thereof, or you might find something similar to the original at a motor factor.
Ducati use 'wellnuts' which seize up after 3 years and cause me grief.

Old Landys have dozens of these fittings which are used with self-tapping screws on the production line, I assume because one man can fasten them up without having to have anyone on the other side holding a spanner.

They are, of course, rubbish from a pure engineering perspective but the Land Rover accountants obviously love them.

I have replaced almost every one on my Son's Series 3 with proper flanged stainless steel bolts and flanged nuts, apart from the ones which hold the dashboard in place to the bulkhead which are only ever accessible from one side. It does, of course, need two people to tighten the stainless steel fittings but that's fine. :)

I thought we'd established that they are not Interscrews. If they're just an expanding plug, what's the purpose of the slot and is the central hole threaded?

Dragging this one out, even for PBO !!

If the panels are new, use Dual Lock to fix them. If they have existing holes pick the closest sized square fixings from the gazillion on Ebay, drill holes slightly if necessary, tap grommets into hole and its job done. You can put a square grommet into a round hole :)
