3M Di-Noc Any good?

My dash panels are aluminium plate with some sort of compressed card covering in matt black. Where screw holes are the aluminium has begun to corrode and lift this covering. Not to bad now but it will be soon if left untreated.

I'm not phased about keeping the original black look and would prefer a more traditional wood look finish. I'm going to give Di-Noc a go as a sample sheet and test on the inside of a small panel yielded a good look.

Before committing I was wondering what longevity may be like and if anybody else has used the product what their experience was.

OK let me rephrase the question. On some of the more modern sports boat there is a wood type veneer on the dashboard panelling. Only it's not wood it is some form of (Vinyl?) covering. What is it?
 
There is a dip coating method where a plastic film sits on top of water in a bath and the item to be coated is pushed down into it. It is then baked to give a hard surface.
I have it on my dashboard as a carbon fibre look and cost ca. £80.
It isn't wood but hard plastic.

Hi, the product you may be looking for is called Belbien. You can buy it from Surfex coverings UK, its the same material that is used on all the cruise liners. It is more a decorative film which can wrap doors, walls, most things. I know because i'm actually the Director so I know of all the products very well. There are 2 main ones on the market, the others have problems with them eg the self adhesive...3M is not made by 3M it is out sourced to other factory's in Japan...Belbien is not, it is the original vinyl covering and made since the 70s under the same roof. The other difference's is cost...Belbien we aim to always be that step ahead so are slightly cheaper if only by £2 a L/meter, the other is when its made 3M can print onto white material so you do get that slight white line when joining the material up, Belbien is not the pattern is all the way through. I am actually looking on these sites as I have said to my partner we sell a lot to the cruise liners everyday. I think there is a market to bring this to the public on their vessels/yachts/power boats and I would like to offer people the chance to get that luxury. There is over 500 patterns to choose from...from Mc Donalds Yellow to every wood you can think of/metals/abstracts/fabrics to 18crt gold leaf. To give you an idea of cost...anywhere from £20 a meter to £40 for the top end it actual comes 1.22m wide so its a L/meter

Can you provide samples to try out? I have made my own dash panels before from marine ply and then applying a veneer - is the process similar?

Yes of course I can. The best thing to do would be to go to the site...www.surfexcoverings.com or www.belbien.co.uk either will do. Then if you have a look and download the online catalogue you will see every single range. There is 500+. Once you know which patterns you may be interested in just give the office a call and say you have been speaking to me on the ybw.com, they will pass the message on to me and they will deal with your request, they are a very friendly bunch, so they will send you out A4 samples in whatever your choice. No charge for samples....And yes very similar, just make your panels, prime the timber, sand smooth, then the Belbien is a self adhesive backing, just peel back and adhere it to the panel. The best way is a post below just watch some videos on youtube and have a play. The effects are amazing. It has its IMO certs, Class A fire rated etc. Very easy clean etc any problems just drop me a line on here and I will be happy to help. Kind regards. The dipping wrap (actual immersion in fluid) shown in the video looks better than normal vinyl wrapping. Apart from getting a company to do it, is it possible to buy it and do the dipping yourself.
