Etch Primer for Aluminium

I just use Auto Tek sprays these days. Buy them on Amazon. Seems to work well on Al, lead or iron. The least successful etch primer I've used was two-part that I used on a lead keel. Came off after a year. Amazon cheapy has stayed on for 5 years now.

PAELLA,
There is often a debate over self etching primer vs zinc chromate. Google for information.
You give no info on the what you are priming (eg large sheet or plate, small forging casting etc) and it's application/use (in air or water, salt or fresh, inside or outside) so the legitimacy of any advise is questionable.
Please supply more details,

Yes, you are right I should have provided more details; I'm painting a small outboard engine. Occasionally in salt water but not for long. I have gear housing to paint which will obviously be submerged but other areas will not be in salt water although they will get wet with sea water.

I made an adapter plate to fit between my radar pole and the scanner, as they did not match. I made it in an aluminium sheet that I guess was a half hard 1xxx series, i.e. 99.9% Al hard rolled. I painted it with Hammerite special metals primer and white Hammerite smooth. That was in 2001 and it is still in good condition on the boat.

I did consider Hamerite but seem to remember in another thread on painting props that Hamerite special metals primer is now waterbased (and it is, I checked). There were a few people questioning if the current formula was as good as the original product - I wonder if anyone has any experinece of the latest formula being as good?

I've not used the new formula water based special primer but the water based Hammerite I used on my wrought iron gates is not as 'sticky' as the old stuff. Not a scientific test though.

I've been using this for a while now, both above and below the waterline. It's been great and also fairly affordable. Done the saildrive leg, propeller, and steering quadrant in it - it stuck to the alu, and everything I painted it over with (Hammerite, Velox Plus, etc.) stuck to it. Recommended it to a neighbour who did his alu window frames and he reported good results as well.

Well the new formula worked v well as a base for antifoul on my bronze/stainless prop last season, pretty much 100% still there at the end of the season, as was the antifoul sitting ontop.
