Best way of removing old rotten foam backed headliner residue?

So my headlining is a knackered and is falling down in a few places. I have ordered some replacement stuff from the lovely folk at Toomer and Hayter.

Removing the residue of the rotten foam after removing the headlining is a nightmare though, doing it with a wire brush on its own will take me forever and a day. Is it safe to use one of these on the inside of the hull attached to my trusty, much used Bosch grinder?

I find you don't need to remove it all - just all the loose stuff with stiff non-wire brush and any raised bits. Then (and this took me three boats to learn) paint over it with glue to make a decent surface for attaching the replacement.

Don't muck about with aerosol adhesives..buy the Hawkhouse SAF111 stuff..
Good luck..

Do as HH suggest. SAF111 on the GRP and Trade Tack Aerosol on the foam.

If applying non foamed backed vinyl use SAF111 on both surfaces.

I spoke to the guys and T and H and they recommended this stuff: http://www.toomerandhayter.co.uk/products/detail/?id=152&cat=5 rather than my rubbish spray on CA that I had planned to use :) Thanks for the warning. The previous headlining I put up in some cupboards was rubbish too and is peeling off, so hopefully this will be more successful.

Use angle grinder with a wire brush attachment. Get as much off as you possibly can.
Wear an all in one disposable suit, otherwise you will itch for a week
Don't bother sticking back more foam backed vinyl as you will be repeating the whole exercise in less than 10 years....
Instead purchase double sided sticky back foam sheets room Hawk House in Gosport.
Then stick new (or old) plain vinyl on the foam.
No glue, no fumes, different foam material...
PM me and I'll send you lots of pictures...

I used pieces of rubber and elbow grease, and, yes it took for ever, but worked. Replacement foam backed vinyl had a woven membrane at the back which allowed some margin to slide it around a little when glueing it on.

I wouldn't use a wire brush, get one of these: http://www.hawkehouse.co.uk/adhesives/glue-removal/face-off-disc-drill.html Should be able to find one in B&Q or a local hardware shop.

When I replaced all the headlining on my boat I bought all my materials and adhesives from Hawkehouse. I did not get on with the face off disc, probably fine on a relactively flat surface but not on my boat. I used a good quality cup brush (similar to that shown) on an angle grinder, CAREFULLY.

Dust mask, eye protection and decent vacuum cleaner essential.

Discussed this method with Hawke House and they were of the opinion that the s/a adhesive may well fail in Med temperatures. (in far less than 10 years).

By far the quickest way when I did it was a face off disc on an angle grinder. Wear a *proper* mask, GOGGLES and overalls, ear defenders, and prepare for a mess. I had no problem with corners - perhaps because I was using a grinder mount one rather than a drill one? I burned through a few discs though. Cheaper on eBay than from HH and didn't seem any worse quality than the HH one. It will eat gel coat - but not glass layers so generally ok most boat interior surfaces.... Not used carefully they will eat the top veneer of ply!
