I am tired of water cooled outboards and problems with impellers etc....

So I've looked around for air cooled versions but there dont seem to be many.

So do you think this will work......

Step 1. Take the leg and mountinh bracket assembly from a knackered one.

Step 2. Bolt on , with a suitable shaft adapter, a strimmer or lawnmower engine

I know it will be a little more complicated, but surely it can't be too hard.....

Quite possible.

Already been done though hasn't it? called Honda.

You might be able to find an old air cooled Yamaha.

Crescent/Archimedes/Volvo Penta 3.9hp were air cooled. Still a few of those about. Also a 5hp version .... one of those in the corner of my garage.

Some had water cooled exhausts .... mine has....... you might need to incorporate that or you will cook any rubber bushes in the swivel.

None have ever been particularly popular, even the current small Honda.

However, once you spent all the time energy and money to get it to work you will discover why virtually nobody makes an air cooled outboard! Honda is the only manufacturer who has persevered with an engine that is just about tolerable, but have never put any money into development, so it remains crude noisy and very much an acquired taste.
 
Honda have in the past also produced an outboard type leg, with a belt drive from a GX series stationary engine. Pretty heavy but very useful in some markets. earlier than that you could look at the ATCO boat impeller and smaller clones produced using JAP or JLO engines. I have examples of the latter two and am looking out for the Honda version......

I am about to build another one,1 1/2HP 35CC fourstroke, auto clutch OHC ballraced big and little end revs to around 7500 rpm and should weigh around 10lbs in weight.
You can actually buy kits to build home made outboards. If you look up mudskipper outboards you will see.
