Hi folks,

Just wondering if any of the forum users have any experience of the above engines? Reliability etc. I've experience of Cummins, Ford, Perkins etc but very little info online about these models.

Cheers for now!

Thanks for replying. Do you happen to know what HP it is? The one I'm looking at is approx 4000hrs since new 360hp continuous rated, also in an ex charter boat.

Probably Daewoo 136 8.1 liter, excellent engine. Call Watamota in Newton Abbot they will be happy to give you history of the motor.

Consumables are inexpensive.

Thanks for the reply Latestarter. It is the L086 block, and I'm glad to hear that consumables are inexpensive - my last engine was a 500HP Cummins QSC.

These engines are proving reliable in the fishing fleet as said above- only issues are with corrosion of heat exchangers and intercoolers, but it seems to be a maintenance (lack of) problem exacerbated by a less 'robust' mix of metals. Careful selection of pipework material and rigid enforcement of anode change intervals and coolant additives seem to be the cure.

Some dealers up in Scotland are very good.

Thanks NorthUp. I don't suppose theres any real way of checking the condition inside the above parts without removing them first? (I'm not very mechanical apart from the usual filter changes etc!)

The boat is out of the water at the moment so I'd need to get her fired up and possibly even launched for engine trials before completing the deal. I'm viewing the boat again tomorrow so will get any engine numbers that I can and give Watermota a call to see if they have a history of it. Looking at one of the pics I took, it looks like one of the parts might have already been replaced as it is a different colour to the block?

It's a 420 rated at 360 been in work for 6 years 2600 hours, no problems, driving a 36 bullett at 15 knots fully loaded. Painted white, apparently the commercial engines are painted green?

I've spoken to the guy selling the boat and he said he did think it was 400hp+ derated. Its in a Lochin 33 giving 14kts @ 1800rpm

No easy way to check the tubestack internally, but I have noticed the inside faces of the seawater cooling pump was very pitted on the worst engine I have seen.
Remove the rubber impeller, the internal surface of the bronze body should be polished, not pitted and rough to the touch.
Check if the previous owner is aware of the need for corrosion inhibitors in the fresh water system, and the tiny anode in the heat exchanger.

Thanks NorthUp. I'm going over the boat again tomorrow so will check it out. Also had the advantage of speaking to the previous owner today who owned the boat for 14 years, and installed the Daewoo from new. He said it had been looked after and only ever ran it at 1900-2000rpm for fuel and comfortable speeds. In fact he even said if he had the work for it, he'd buy it back from the guy he sold it to!

Good luck with the purchase, have liked the look of a Lochin 33 for many a year...

Thanks Rob, me too. This one seems to fit the bill for the time being. I'd like to end up with the 38' but thats a few years away at the moment. That boat you're building is going to be amazing! Did you buy the engines for her yet?

Confusion on your part I think OS?....I was conversing last night with RobG on his own thread 50ft of Grey Steel....so you got the wrong Rob my friend!

The 33 you're looking at, is it the one in White with a Welsh name accross the stern?

Haha, Sorry! I remember seeing the 'Rob' bit when I was looking at the photo's and wondering how they could get Steel to look that good. Clearly need to take a step away from the desk. I should have realised when I had to wonder why you'd want a Lochin 33 when you are building a brand new boat...I think that step away should be to the pub :)

Yes thats the one. 33 Sports Fisherman, ex charter fishing boat. Do you know the boat?

No, afraid I don't know it as its quite a few miles away from my location, but once I knew what boat it was I looked in the first place I would have expected a 33 to be advertised, looks a cracker!
