Toilet hose-which is best?

I am replacing my toilet hoses after a season of increasingly smelly trips. I want to use the very best stuff and am interested in Vetus sanitary hose (white with a blue stripe along its length, code - SAHOSE, not the cheaper all-white one). It is expensive, some £12 a metre, but is it the best?

I cannot say if it is the best but We have used the Vetus White with Blue stripe, it has never leaked or blocked in the two years it has been fitted.

I would use it again, if I needed to.

Also, it doesn't matter how good the hoses are, if your fittings are bad. Make sure they are sound too.

Quality of toilet hose is of less importance than making sure that the installation of the pipe is as short as possible and with gentle curves only and thaty ou pump enough to ensure you evacuate the hose completely My hose is standard reinforced green water grade pipe that has been on the boat about 8 years and has no smell whatsoever.

I used a so-called sanitory grade hose (all white colour) and in less than two years it stank to high heaven. Changed to the vetus stuff and for the last four years no problem at all. yes, keep the pipe runs short and yes they should be all down hill so as not to trap fluid but use the vetus hosing - it's worth the expense.

This is so true. Twenty strokes on the pump will keep the pipe smelling sweet. Fewer will set up a pong!

Are we talking about inlet or outlet hose? The Headmistress keeps telling us it's the inlet hose that smells - and certainly that seems the case on our boat which has miles of it. Can you get this Vetus hose for the inlet too (obviously smaller diameter than the outlet)?

You're confusing two separate problems, Cantata...intake odor, and permeated hoses.

Intake odor is caused by trapped stagnant sea water IN the inlet hose when the boat sits for a while. It's usually confined to the head, goes away when cleared out by the first few flushes...it can permeate the intake hose, but rarely does.

The hoses that become permeated with odor are those that carry sewage--the head and tank discharge hoses, and sometimes the tank vent hose. That odor can permeate the whole boat and does NOT go way with a few flushes because the hose has soaked the waste that produces the odor. The only cure is new hoses.

However, wet dirty sumps and bilges can also make a boat smell like a sewer...I've heard from many people who've replaced their entire sanitation systems to get rid of what they thought was "head" odor...when all they really needed to do was clean--really CLEAN, and flush all the dirty water out--their sumps and bilges.

To know whether a hose has become permeated with odor, wet a clean rag in hot water...wring it out and wrap it around a low section of the hose...let it reman till it cools, then remove it and smell it. If you can smell the same odor on the rag, that hose has become permeated with odor...if you can't, it's fine. Test every section of every hose, using a clean rag for each.

I recently had to replace the heads and pipe work on my newly aquired Centaur.

I found the cheap soil grade hose from marine super store was an absolute bitch to get over the various fittings.

I ended up using vetus stuff to finish off the install. But be aware the external dia. of the vetus may be bigger than any existing stuff and holes tru bulk heads may need enlarging.

Purple marine.com list vetus 38mm waste hose at £8.50 incl.vat according to latest catalogue. which is rather cheaper than most
