hi all
my brother new to boats is looking to buy a chaparral 240 signature built in 2000 with 5 ltr petrol engine as is first boat would like to here of any experiance with this type of boat thanks

don't know much about the boat but would reccomend the engine as well as the drive is checked over.manifolds last about 5 years so if they don,t look new expect £500 for some in the not to distant future.see if it was winterised and see when the water impeller /drive shaft bellows and oils were last done.if no knowledge simple jobs to do yourself with a days labour and if a shops doing it expect to also set aside a further grand.
a run in the boat should always be taken without having it warmed first so any faults you can see.
a powerboat level 2 course would be a bonus if your brother is a first timer as its a large craft to handle.
don't expect fuel economy!!!!!!

Nautorious had one of these around 2001-2002. Excellent boat, good hull with a fairly deep V for an American sportscruiser. Engine was fine for the boat, with decent rather than sparkling performance (We always felt it would go better with the 5.7 and duoprop). Standard fuel consumption for this type of boat, 2-3 mpg.

Cockpit was very sociable and back berth was huge (but quite tight access for the 'larger' boater). He covered some serious miles in the boat including a trip to the Balearics. Bathing platform was a little on the narrow side. (He had a custom made extension made and shipped over from the States-never fitted and still in my garage if your brother is interested)

We think his actual old boat is currently for sale at EBY. All in all, he was very happy with the boat - one of the higher end sportscruisers available, solid and well put together.

Great boat but i am obviously bias. Driven loads of 240's and all i would add to the good advice so far is try and go for an EFI model if poss, the carbed 5.0 can be a little slow onto the plain. %.0 EFI is fine, very few had 5.7's that usually went into the 260 which is a much bigger and better boat in my opinion, There is a 260 for sale at EBY but its a bit over priced. If you need advice and provinance of the boat ring the UK importer. Blewater Marine in Pwllheli.

Yep,

I had a 1999 model with the 5.0l efi and Bravo 3 Drive. The Bravo 3 drive was prone to electrolysis. I loved the boat as it had great sea handling and a very usable cockpit. Also towed it to Spain and back (well Menorca).

Only real issues were the electrolysis of the Alpha 3, the holding tank was poor grade S/S and leaked and the covers (full camper) were a pain to use as were knackered.

However, I love Chaparrals and had 2, and would get one again.

Cheers

Paul
