Can anyone point me to an online manual, or some information, for my Yamaha Malta 6L5 2-stroke outboard ?

I have some basic questions like
How easy is it to service ? Where is the impeller and should I be seeing a tell-tale stream of cooling water (I am not).

Thanks

All water cooled outboards should produce a steady stream of cooling water when running. If it doesn't you need to find out why before using it. Possible causes are:- faulty impellor, blockage in the waterways

Malta

I have a 4Hp version that came with a recent boat purchase, it had no tail tail - had it serviced and repaired. Still no water, spoke to engine shop who confirmed thats correct for this version. 1 seasons use since and no problems

owners manuals back to 1998 available to down load from http://www.yamaha-motor.com/outboard/service/viewmanuals/outboard_manuals.aspx

There should be a year identifying letter on the ID plate.

There may well not be a telltale. Not all outboards have a telltale as such but I'd expect to see some water, maybe no more than a mist, being blown from the backpressure relief ports on the "leg"

You should be able to touch and maintain contact with the cylinder block for a count of three. If its too hot to do that, esp if a splash of water sizzles or the paint is discoloured, it is almost certainly overheating.

Unless this is a model with a fixed drive ( ie no neural or reverse) the water pump will be positioned on top of the gear case. To access it the gearcase assembly will have to be removed.

Basic servicing is pretty much the same for all outboards..( 4 stroke a bit different obviously)

No so I am afraid.

i have one. easy to service, change plug, clean out tank+carb. impeller at botom of leg well 2/3 down anyway (need to split leg). no tell tail water jet, nor on a tohatsu 9.8

I gave you the link to it. Subsequently, so did VicS.

I am very grateful for your attempts to help. However, the link you gave took me to the Yamaha page which allows searching for manuals for particular engines. As I said, I had already been there and failed to find any reference to the 6L5 engine. I did however find what appears to be a generic manual for small 2-strokes (2Y, 3Y, 5Y) which seems to cover the 6L5, judging by the illustrations but not by the engine id's.
