Does anyone have experience of this boat?

Is it a good sailer, suitable for a novice and his family on the West coast of Scotland?

The boat is 1987 with a Yanmar 2GM20.

The boat is not too local to us, but a forum member on here is going to look it over for us on monday.

Your thoughts and advice much appreciated.

Cheers

Al.

Thanks, I'm not looking for comments on any specific boat, but more on the type of boat itself, and its performance.

But I appreciate your comments thanks.
Good point about heating and autopilot, heating I can getr Eberspacher at cost, and have fitted one into a 23' cuddy, so no problem there, Autohelm, I have a source for getting that at cost, still don't know how much that is though! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Do you really need to pay for transport, could these boats not be sailed from one destination to another, providing we have time to do so?

Cheers

no actual experience but we did look at the same j sd as you looked at in troon. despite the low price we decided against purely on the condition. i spoke to an owner in largs who had swopped over from mobo and he was very pleased with his j sd 28. my research at the time showed up nothing bad about the model. if the 28 in troon had been in better condition she would certainly have been on the short list.
as you don`t want to specify the particular 28 i have sent you a pm as well.

I guess by "Scottish West Coast" you are thinking about the Clyde ? - there aren't many motor boats of that size once you get round the Mull of Kintyre northwards

Have since looked up Jeanneau Sundream 28 & see it's a sailing yacht (was fooled by your picture and reference to Loch Lomond) - I don't know the boat but my erroneous comment maybe still applies - on a boat that size you should have no problems in the Clyde

For Auto helm, you'll be looking for a Tiller Pilot, Only 2 makes available
Raymarine (slightly more expensive) and Simrad/Navico
The Sirad TP10 starts about £200.
There a very nice Westerly Konsort for sale at Ardrossan well worth a look and price is reduced from what it says on there website.
PM sent re' SD28 at Largs

Oh, Lord, these partial threads with posts deleted are infuriating! I would appreciate the views of the learned members about the SD 28 which was at Troon? (Blue Ark). I have a good reason for asking.

Why do you have good reason in asking?

The deleted thread didn't mention Blue Ark, it was more about the other boat I have my eyes on, and I asked if the poster would mind editing his post to not show the boat I am looking at.

My wife and I looked at Blue Ark a couple of times, and thought too long about it, it was slightly over our budget but we now wish we had moved on it.

If you are the new owner, how are you getting on with her?

Cheers

Hi, Alistair, not me, but a friend bought her after I had a look over it with him. Looked a bit tired on the inside, but refreshing it will be a winter project for him. Has a great racing record, and we went out with previous owner for a test sail, and were reasonably impressed.

We sailed her to her new home in Rothesay last weekend, and she performed very well. Lots of extras including umpteen sails, which look in good order, needs Eber installed etc, all well within friend's capabilities. Running rigging will need replacing as well.

Alistair,

There is a good Jeanneau owners forum and lots of other useful info at www.jeanneau-owners.com I have just been looking on there at a link to the original Sun Dream 28 brochure at www.jeanneau-owners2.com/specifications/id264.htm .

The Sun Dream 28 looks very similar to the Jeanneau Sun Light 30 that we have just bought. I think you will find her a very good boat for cruising the west coast of Scotland.

If you are a beginner, the main thing is to choose your weather carefully and work up to stronger conditions only slowly as you get more experience. The boats perform very well and are frequently raced. You should not be afraid of reefing down well if the wind is at all fresh, she will still keep up with many larger boats even under reduced sail.

As others have said, a Tillerpilot will cost around £200 and we have a Simrad and a Raymarine one as a spare. The weather down here in Cornwall is milder in winter, so we don't have a heater.

Thankyou John, ITs great to see the origional brochure.
Good website too thanks.

Good advice too thanks. We will be fair weather sailers purely cause we have a little one with us. But we want a boat that will cope with severe conditions should we get caught out.

A tillerpilot and heating will be a must for us.

Sadly the boat I had my eye on, has been offered on yesterday, so the hunt continues for another SunDream 28 or a very cheap Moody 28, which has a similar aft cabin.

Thanks to all for their advice.

Cheers

Al.
