New Benjenbav - spot the difference

Fingers crossed for more good results. I think it would be great if the boat turned out to be competitive.

New Benjenbav - spot the difference

I was going to post about that result at the time, but then I realised there were only 3 finishers in the class. An excellent result in a difficult race, but not yet perhaps proof that it’s competitive on handicap.

Adding a NMEA 2000 device to my SeaTalk-NG network

Just a quick note to say this work is now done and everything is working nicely. To summarise, I created a new section in my existing STNG backbone using N2K cables, enabling me to bring my existing Em-Trak b924 AIS, and a new B&G VHF into the predominantly STNG network. To make the initial...

    Boat Market

Here’s a listing for one, in case anyone wants to see any more pics (no connection). Difficult to judge condition imo.

Urgent advice needed... GIBSEA 84. Can she take the ground on hard sand?

I believe most French swing keel designs from the 80s and 90s exist because of a need to get over shallow bars on certain parts of their coastline. They’re not usually designed to take the ground, with a few exceptions such as the Beneteau 311. I had a swing keel First 235 and would never dry...

    Buying a Boat

I’m a PBO and DIY if possible, but that sounds cheaper than running our ageing boat. Maybe I’ll get some kettle bells. 😀

    Tide calculation?

Not the Solent, but where we sail on the UK East coast, choosing a route to cross the Thames Estuary with best tide / fastest passage time can be a complex affair. There’s also sometimes the consideration of having enough water either during the passage or upon arrival. Luckily, a very helpful...

Boats will be flying off the shelf

I think the definition of “cheaply” might be subjective here. :D This boat was in our marina for a while, must have been just before he set off for the continent.

List of bilge keel boats, 27 to 33ft or so?

RM will be well over budget I would have thought. It's small, but the Gib’Sea 76 had a twin keel option. There's a Beneteau Oceanis 311 with a stub wing keel, lifting plate and reinforced twin rudders. Likely to be north of £30k though. Can't think of any other European boats in budget. There's...

List of bilge keel boats, 27 to 33ft or so?

Our family boat is a Westerly Fulmar. Ours is a fin, but they came in a twin keel version which is well rated. £16k buys a slightly project-y one, £22-25k for the better examples. The saloon is huge for the 32’ LOA, and 6 people can dine comfortably. For a couple it’s very spacious. We sail with...

Adding a NMEA 2000 device to my SeaTalk-NG network

Hey all, I’ve started putting the N2K section of the backbone in, but have run into a bit of a logic problem. As described above, we’re “breaking” the STNG backbone to insert a N2K section into it. To make the break I take out the male (blue) STNG plug that’s in my 5 way STNG socket in the...

so are you going to sail through the UK winter?

I have the Raymarine Evo-100 system (tiller pilot version). It weaves a bit when you ask it to steer to a heading in heavy weather with a following sea, but if you set it to steer to the wind instead it works great.
