    VP Oil Pressure Sensor change.

Hi all I’m going to be changing the pressure sensor on my VP D4-260. Q: Do I need to drain down the oil in order to change the sensor or just be quick with the change to minimise any loss?

    Slightly milky sterndrive leg oil!

Looks like (as predicted) that the seals do need replaced. Q: How simple is that job? One that a competent DIY’er could do? Can it be done in-situ or do I need to remove the drive and do on the bench? I’ve done the vast majority of engine services myself and a (car) engine rebuild in the...

    VP DPH Casing bit size?

Hi all - I’m going to be doing a leg service (oil change / anodes etc) on my DPH-A sterndrive leg. Q: Can anyone remind me the Torx bit size required to remove the plastic cowl? I recall my bits sitting on the boat are now corroded so I’m going to order some new ones, but I can’t recall...

    Max power Bow Thruster intermittent.

It’s a single tunnel mounted thruster - I’m assuming it uses the same brushes for thrusting to port and to starboard, so not sure if that would be the issue (happy to be corrected if my assumption is wrong).

    Max power Bow Thruster intermittent.

Hi All - my Max Power Bow thruster is working intermittently on one side. It will work once every 4 or 5 attempts to invoke thrust on starboard - port works fine. I wondering if anyone else has come across the same issue and whether it’s a case of stripping/cleaning the contacts in the...

VP D4 260 spinning the Turbo

UPDATE: Spun the turbine with an electric drill. 99% freer spinning. Took out for test - all good. Then did 2hr at cruising speed and some WOT. Issue fixed and I expect it shouldn’t reoccur this season. Likely I’ll strip at winter and get it refurbished. Thanks all for your input.

    Slightly milky sterndrive leg oil!

Just an update on this old post….. The leg was removed and pressure vacuum tested with no fault found (by a trusted marine engineer). It was refilled with oil and reinstalled. I’m going to change the oil in a few days so wish me luck!! Ps. I did loose a prop hub last year so I’m hoping...

VP D4 260 spinning the Turbo

Final question…anyone know the direction of rotation of the turbo when viewed from the exhaust elbow side…. Is it clockwise or counterclockwise?

VP D4 260 spinning the Turbo

Thankfully not much force is needed to get past the friction.

VP D4 260 spinning the Turbo

It spins mostly without any jams - but there is a bit of friction for about 1/4 of the turn. Someone suggested spinning it with a drill to clear off any remaining corrosion, which I assume is in the body of the turbo housing.

VP D4 260 spinning the Turbo

I previously posted that my turbo was sticking and I managed to free it a bit. I plan on taking a power drill/screwdriver and continue to spin the turbo to further loose any corrosion jamming it. Q: can I simply use the hex head (shown with blue arrow below) on the exposed turbo shaft to turn...

    VP D4 Turbo issue?

Update: The turbo was indeed stuck. I’ve managed to free it with some WD40 and lots of turns. It now rotates freely for about 1/2 a rotation and with a little bit of resistance for the other half. I didn’t have time to run it today, but hopefully a good blast on my next visit will prove if...

    VP D4 Turbo issue?

Hi all I wonder if anyone can help with this….I had my boat with single VP D4-260 out for a shakedown run and I couldn’t get to WOT. It spools up to 2,200 a 2,400 with a whining noise coming from (I assume) the turbo. The pressure gets up to 100kpa max. Interestingly I had had the same issue...

Exhaust Hose Clamps - How tight is too tight?

Thanks @SC35 & @SimonD - I managed to track down a VP document showing that the torque should be 20 to 25Nm for the clamp on the Elbow. I did the lower clamp at a similar torque. I must admit this was tighter than I had originally done and I’d still like to find a specific torque for the lower...

Exhaust Hose Clamps - How tight is too tight?

Hi I’m refitting my exhaust hose coupling between the exhaust elbow and the transom exit pipe on my VP D4-260. Q: How tight should the exhaust clamps be? They are sizeable clamps (not jubilee) and I want them tight but not too tight that they (possibly) damage the elbow and/or exhaust transom...
